THE RULES OF WAR

HIGHER CARD TAKES THEM ALL.

  1. Each battle, you and the table turn over your top card.
  2. Higher rank wins both cards, which go to the bottom of the winner's deck. Aces are high. Suits don't matter.
  3. A tie means War. Each side lays one card face down, then one face up. The higher face-up card takes the whole pile. Another tie means another War.
  4. Can't finish a War? If you run out of cards mid-War, you lose the match.

Match lengths

Quick and Standard end after 30 or 90 battles: most cards wins, and a 26–26 tie plays one sudden-death battle. Classic is traditional War: play until one side holds all 52.
